Name: Carina von Bredow
Graduation Year: 2008
Hometown: Beamsville, Canada
Major: International Business
Weekend Activity: Visiting New York City
Junior Carina von Bredow is from Beamsville, Canada, a small town just over the border between Niagra Falls and Toronto. "No one really knows where it is," she says. Carina came to Manhattanville to play ice hockey and major in International business. She is currently co-captain of the nationally ranked women's hockey team. Someday, she hopes to work for a sports company.
Carina chose Manhattanville because "I love how you are so close to New York City, but not in the city." She also chose Manhattanville for its business classes. Her favorite this semester is a business start up class. Carina and the other classmates in her group must create a business plan, get it approved by the school, and use funds supplied by Manhattanville to actually start the business. Then once the business is up and running successfully, the team must sell the business. The seed money goes right back into the fund to be used by next semesters entrepreneurs. The profit goes to a nonprofit organization.
When she isn't playing ice hockey or running a business, Carina participates in breast cancer walks and fundraisers for the ice hockey team. She also visits New York City as often as she can.
She has been to the museums, ellis island and the statue of liberty. "But the best thing to do is just walk around," she says. "It's so exciting. Then I get to come back up to Manhattanville where I feel so safe."
