Math Placement Testing

Online Math Placement Test

The Math Placement Exam is MANDATORY for ALL incoming students, and must be completed PRIOR to orientation.  You must complete the exam, regardless of your intentions to take a math course or not.  (Consult “Reasons Why You May Need to Take Math at Manhattanville College,” which will be included in your orientation materials.)  Please note, you will not be permitted to register for a math course unless you take the math placement exam!  The test is a World Wide Web-based program, so it may be completed on any computer (PC or Mac) through which you can access the Internet. Remember that how you connect to the Internet (dial-up, cable modem, DSL, etc.) will affect the speed with which the Math Placement Test will appear on your computer. Please be patient and complete each step of the test process in order.

Although the test is timed and should take no longer than 30 minutes, you will not be stopped or penalized in any way if you need to take more than 30 minutes.  If you experience technical problems, please contact Michelle Longhitano, Director of Freshman Mathematics, via e-mail at longhitanom@mville.edu.  To take the placement test, follow the instructions below.

To enroll and take the Math Placement Exam:

  1. Go to http://blackboard.mville.edu/
  2. Click Create Account.  This account will be your Blackboard account as long as you are at Manhattanville College.
  3. Fill in the required information marked with a red asterisk - under Personal Information: First Name, Last Name and email address; under Account Information: User Name [enter your Last Name followed by first initial], Password [choose a password], and Verify Password [enter your password again] and supply a current telephone number in the proper field; then click Submit. If you receive a message that the user name has been taken, use the user name that is suggested, and continue to enter your password information as you did before.
  4. The system will respond: “User added.” Click OK
  5. In “Welcome” screen, click the Courses tab
  6. In the “Course Catalog” list on the right side of the screen, click Placement
  7. Scroll down to “Math Placement”, but DO NOT click the link. Instead, click the Enroll button on the right
  8. Enter the access code, mville2008 (which must be in lower case letters), where requested, and click the Submit button
  9. On the self enrollment page you will receive a “receipt success” message. Click the OK button
  10. You should be at the “Welcome to the Manhattanville College Math Placement” page. Please read the page, and follow the directions for each of the three parts of the Placement exam.
  11. After completing and submitting each part of the exam, continue to follow the instructions on the “Welcome” page.
  12. Once you have your recommendation, click Logout at the top of the screen.

Information regarding your math recommendation will be made available to your advisor at orientation. This information will be utilized when you choose your courses for fall 2008.  Please contact Michelle Longhitano or any a member of the department of Math and Computer Science if you have a concern about your recommendation.
