Advice for Parents
Welcome Parents
We are here to provide comprehensive career planning and job search services for Manhattanville students and alumni at every stage of their lives. We offer individual counseling sessions with a professional career counselor ranging from helping freshmen choose a major to consulting with career changers, well past their college graduation. Finding a meaningful and satisfying career involves self-discovery, career exploration, job search strategies and getting a job offer.
We are strong advocates of experiential learning for all students to help them learn more about themselves and the world of work. There are many opportunities students have to take advantage of: internships, research in a field of interest, student clubs, community volunteering, and part-time and seasonal student employment.. By getting involved in meaningful activities during college, a student can develop strong marketable skills and meet professionals who can serve as mentors and contacts for career questions.
The CCD also offers an array of workshops and events that help students with their job search. Workshops address deciding on a major, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing and networking are scheduled throughout the year. In addition, we sponsor panels and events with alumni and professionals who represent a wide range of career fields. In the spring, we sponsor an on-campus job and internship fair open to all students. These events are listed on our event calendar each semester.
We are proud to launch our new and convenient one-stop database, eRecruiting, where students can find and apply to jobs and internships. In addition to our online database, we provide students with useful online resources to help them with their career planning
How You Can Help Your Student
- Encourage your student to think about their future early. Suggest a visit to the career office for an initial career assessment.
- Be patient. Career planning is a process that is very individualized. Some students come with a career focus, but most students need time to find out what interests them and what career possibilities are out there.
- Be a good listener. Students can change their minds several times during their college experience and get stressed as graduation approaches. Have conversations about what interests them and why.
- Be a mentor. Talk about your own job with your child. Tell them about the setting, what the expectations are and what you both like and don’t like about it.
- Encourage your student to network with people you know. Students can learn so much by talking with professionals already working in the field. Informational interviews can sometime lead to job offers!
