Welcome, Class of 2011

8.31.07

PURCHASE, N.Y. - New students and their families got their first real taste of Manhattanville this past weekend, Aug. 24th – 26th, at freshman orientation.

Holding thick red envelopes full of information, the class of 2011 was led through a variety of workshops on topics such as alcohol awareness, time management, and how to use social networking sites like Facebook to one’s advantage.  Seated in circles on the quad and in the cafeteria, the frosh listened intently to advice dished out by orientation advisors. The advisors, students themselves, gave tips on everything from professors to dorm life to the food.

Chosen from a record number of applications, this year’s freshman class consists of about 500 students.  There are students from Afghanistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Hungary and 39 other countries.  One is an internationally ranked Irish step dancer.  Another played soccer for the Spanish National Team.

Judging by the groups of friends forming around campus and a beaming President Berman, the event was a success. Freshman Danny Carlisto from Eastchester, NY found that “The whole event was very informative,” though he got tired toward the end.  All in all, though, “It was fun.  I met some great people there.”

Parents and an army of minivans mobilized in front of the dorms to help with the move in, where students posed for their ID cards and lugged plastic bin after bin into their new homes.  Now that students are moved in and ready to go, what comes next? For these freshmen, the college experience is just beginning.
