Midnight Run
06.12.2007
Craig Donnelly, Community Service Coordinator for the Duchesne Center, recently took ten student volunteers on the College's first summer Midnight Run.
The Midnight Run web site describes the program as: "...a hunger and food relief program dedicated to finding common ground between the housed and the homeless. In over 900 relief missions per year, Midnight Run volunteers from churches, synagogues, schools, and other civic groups distribute food, clothing, blankets, and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City."
At Manhattanville College, student volunteers prepare 75-100 sandwiches and sort 75-250 articles of clothing and toiletries each week to distribute to the homeless in New York City. "We prepared the food at 7:30 p.m. in the Duchesne Center, then we left the campus at 8:30 p.m. to travel to the city," said Mr. Donnelly. "Each student had a task to complete while we were there. We stopped at four different places in New York and handed out items such as clothes, soup and coffee. The best part about Midnight Run is that we get to connect with people that are trying to improve their lives, and give them a helping hand." At the moment, Mr. Donnelly has six more Midnight Runs planned in the fall and spring with various sports teams, student clubs, and the Map Office.
