Assistant Professor Lisa Rafanelli joined the Department of Art History at Manhattanville College in 2004 as a full-time member of the faculty, and as a specialist in the art of the Italian Renaissance.  She teaches a wide range of courses from the introductory level Survey of Art History, to courses on Medieval Art and Architecture, Art in Italy during the Early and High Renaissance, and Northern Renaissance Art.  She is currently developing a new course offering, Baroque Art and Architecture in Italy.   Her advanced seminars have focused on Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Art of 15th Century Florence, and the Art of Renaissance Venice.  Prof. Rafanelli regularly participates in the department’s annual Study Tour of Venice, which is entering its ninth year.  She also led a Study Tour for Manhattanville Students to Florence, Italy in 1998.  Prof. Rafanelli earned her Ph.D. in 2004 from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts.  She is currently at work on turning her dissertation, “The Ambiguity of Touch: Saint Mary Magdalene and the Noli Me Tangere in Early Modern Italy,” into a book.  She has published articles on the sculpted pulpits of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, and on the funerary sculpture of Tino di Camaino.  She has an extensive list of conference papers and talks, and most recently chaired and moderated a session titled “The Thematization of the Senses in Sixteenth Century European Art,” at the 95th Annual College Art Association Conference, held in New York City in February 2007.
