Joy Scantlebury, Full-Time Faculty

Joy Scantlebury has had a lifelong interest in language and international affairs, having gone to Sao Paulo, Brazil as a study ambassador while in high school.  As an undergraduate student at Smith College, with a major in Latin American Studies and a minor in Spanish, Joy also traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, where she volunteered at a day care center.

Living in these two countries were great learning experiences for Joy.  In Brazil, she picked up a working knowledge of Portuguese, which was useful when she became a DJ on a Brazilian music show for the Smith College radio station.  In Costa Rica, she became fluent in Spanish from "living the language".

After graduating from Smith College, Joy worked for two years for a New York State senator where she learned about the operations of state government.  She then went on to Teachers College, Columbia University where she received her Master's degree in TESOL.  It was after graduating from Teachers College that she taught ESL at a junior high school for two years before coming to her present position at the English Language Institute.  Joy understands the challenges her students face in acquiring a new language, since she has also been in their shoes.  Her hobbies are reading, playing the piano, ballroom dancing, calligraphy and traveling.
