2008 ARTHUR M. BERGER FIELD TRIP
The 2008 Arthur M. Berger Trip was held on Saturday, March 29. This year’s destination was Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Participants boarded our coach at 7:30 a.m., and shortly after 10 we arrived at our first destination—The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. There, we spent several hours touring the highlights of their collection, with Professor Megan Cifarelli and her colleague, Dr. Kim Benzel of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, leading one group through the Treasures from the Royal Tombs of Ur, while Dr. Deborah Saleeby-Mulligan guided another group through Pre-Columbian and Northwest Coast Indian Art.
At 12:30, we moved on to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where we enjoyed guided tours of the permanent collection led by Professor Gillian Greenhill Hannum (American art and Impressionism galleries) and Professor Saleeby-Mulligan (Dada and Surrealism). The day culminated in a visit to the special exhibition focusing on the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. This exhibition of more than 40 paintings and over 100 photographs was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Included were a number of Kahlo’s self-portraits, several of her less well known still lifes, and numerous photographs documenting her life with husband and fellow artist, Diego Rivera. Many of the works included are from private collections and had not been exhibited publicly before.
